Facts about panic attacks
Panic disorder is twice as common in
women as in men. Not everyone who experiences panic attacks will automatically
go on to develop panic disorder for example, many people just have one attack.
It can appear at any age in children or in the elderly but most often it begins
in young adults. For those who do have panic disorder it's important to
seek treatment or the disorder can become very disabling.
Panic disorder is often accompanied by other conditions such as depression, and may lead to phobias developing in situations where panic attacks have occurred. For example, if you experienced a panic attack whilst sitting in an underground train, you may develop a fear and perhaps start avoiding this form of transport.
In extreme cases, people's fears become so great that they eventually cannot leave the 'safety' of their own house. When people's lives become so restricted by the disorder, as happens in about one-third of all people with panic disorder, the condition is called agoraphobia. Early treatment of panic disorder can often stop the progression to agoraphobia.
