IBS Hypnotherapy clinic based in London, specialising in hypnosis for irritable bowel syndrome

What is irritable bowel syndrome?  Irritable Bowel syndrome is a common digestive disorder. Perhaps 25% of the population are affected but nobody really knows because of the embarrassment in asking for help. Relationships can suffer and quality of life is affected because people become preoccupied with their condition. They feel unable to join in with family and some become hopeless about their situation believing there is no cure.. In 10% of cases, symptoms are severe enough to interfere with normal life. It affects both men and women equally and although it can occur at any age, it most commonly starts between the ages of 15 and 40.

Stress is a major factor in IBS. Sufferers have a bowel that over-responds when stressed. Messages received from the brain cause the intestinal muscles to expand or contract . Stress can affect this normal function. IBS prevents the colon from contracting normally so instead of emptying the bowel, it spasms. These spasms can last for prolonged periods of time and result in changing bowel patterns with constipation being most common. Other symptoms include diarrhoea and bloating and in extreme cases, stress can shut down the digestive system altogether. People with IBS have a hypersensitive bowel and so their pain threshold is lowered.

What causes IBS?  No one knows exactly. Some researchers think IBS is caused by changes in the nerves that control sensation or muscle contractions in the bowel. Others believe the central nervous system may affect the colon. And because women are two to three times more likely than men to have IBS, researchers believe that hormonal changes also play a role. For many women, symptoms are worse during or around their menstrual periods. IBS triggers can range from certain foods or medications but stress appears to be the major trigger.

How can hypnosis help irritable bowel syndrome?  IBS generally comprises of both dietary and psychological factors so the most effective solution should comprise both approaches. Initially,  a proper medical diagnosis needs to be sought. Then, if your doctor agrees, experiment with cutting certain foods like citrus, dairy, yeast, wheat, or other grains out of your diet.

Evidence is overwhelming that IBS symptoms do respond to hypnosis. In addition to this, hypnotherapy routinely produces positive results in up to 80% of IBS sufferers who use it.

British Medical Association...

"Hypnosis may be an effective, long-term therapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), according to a new study published this week.

The findings of the survey were reported in Gut, a specialist publication of the British Medical Association. Research was carried out over six years and involved more than 200 patients.

Around 71 percent of patients said that hypnotherapy successfully improved their condition, with positive effects that lasted up to 5 years. Many also found that hypnosis significantly helped to reduce levels of anxiety and depression associated with the condition.

The patients underwent one-hour sessions of hypnosis lasting up to 12 weeks. They were asked to note any changes in their symptoms, quality of life and mood before and immediately after their treatment, and up to six years later.

IBS is a common but little understood disorder of the digestive tract. It is characterised by a number of common symptoms including recurrent abdominal pains, constipation or diarrhoea.

The precise causes of IBS are not known but doctors suggest it could be brought on by a variety of things such as food, exercise, hormones and stress."
